4-H Dairy

4-H Dairy Project

The 4-H Dairy Cattle Program offers youth a fun and hands-on learning experience that helps develop both dairy-related skills (such as nutrition, housing, and healthcare) and life skills (such as responsibility, decision-making, nurturing, and communication) under the guidance of caring adults. Related activities such as workshops and tours further enrich the learning process.

The 4-H Dairy Program also provides young people with the opportunity to learn about the selection, production, management, evaluation, health, and showing of dairy cattle. 4-H members in the dairy project have access to a variety of learning activities, giving them a broad perspective of the dairy industry. Participation in events such as:

  • Dairy Quiz Bowl
  • Judging Clinics and Contests
  • Workshops
  • Public Presentations
  • Showing Dairy Cattle at the Gouverneur-St. Lawrence County Fair

These activities provide members with skills and knowledge that extend beyond just caring for a project animal.

Showing Dairy Cattle at the Fair

Showing dairy cattle can be a fun and rewarding aspect of the 4-H Dairy Animal Project. To be eligible:

  • Registered Animals: Must be owned by the youth by June 1st of the current year.
  • Non-Ownership Program: This program allows youth who do not own dairy cattle the opportunity to lease an animal for showing.

Important Dates:

  • Dairy cattle identification forms must be submitted to the 4-H Office by June 1st.
  • For more information about non-ownership animals, please contact the 4-H office.
