4-H Cats

4-H Cat Project

The 4-H Cat project offers youth a fun and hands-on learning experience that helps develop essential life skills, while teaching valuable information on the proper care of cats. Topics covered in the curriculum include general care, nutrition, housing, and healthcare. Youth also gain opportunities to develop responsibility, decision-making, nurturing, and communication skills through active participation in the Cat project.

Project Levels:

  • Purr-fect Pals (Beginner Level):
This project is ideal for beginners. Members will learn responsible cat care, how to name and locate body parts, and how to handle, groom, and care for a cat.
  • Climbing Up (Intermediate Level):
This project is suited for intermediate members. Youth will learn to identify cat behaviors, observe and record a cat's six senses, understand a cat’s nutritional needs, and gain insight into common cat illnesses.
  • Leaping Forward (Advanced Level):
Advanced members will dive into topics such as genetics, cat showmanship, organizing a cat quiz bowl, and more.

Cats at the Fair

The Cat Show provides 4-H youth with an opportunity to exhibit their companion household felines (house cats), showcase their knowledge of proper cat care, and experience a sense of accomplishment. This event is designed to be both entertaining and educational for participants and spectators alike.

  • Eligibility: The Cat Show is open to all 4-H members.
  • Arrival and Departure: Cats can be brought to the fairgrounds immediately before the show and must be removed at the conclusion of the event.
  • Vaccination Requirements: All cats must have a Rabies Certificate. It is also recommended that they be vaccinated for feline distemper and feline leukemia—both are infectious, contagious diseases.
  • Handling and Care: Cats must remain under the control of the handler and must be in an appropriate cat carrier or portable kennel until asked to be placed in the judging cages. No animals should be left unattended.
  • Restrictions: No vicious, sick, or difficult-to-handle cats are allowed.

Cat Workshops

These workshops are designed to teach 4-H youth about the basic anatomy, health, and care of household cats. Other topics covered include basic grooming and showmanship. These workshops are open to youth aged 5–18 who are interested in cats.
