4-H Cats

The 4-H Cat project provides youth a fun and hands-on learning experience that develops life skills, as well as teaches valuable information about properly caring for their animal. Subjects such as general care, nutrition, housing, and health care are presented in the curricular materials, through workshops and in preparation of an exhibit. Youth also have the opportunity to develop responsibility, decision-making, nurturing, and communication skills through active participate in the Cat project.

Purr-fect Pals is suggested for the beginner level. In that project, members can learn responsible cat care, name and locate body parts, handle, groom and care for a cat.

Climbing Up is suggested for the intermediate member. In this project, members can learn to identify cat behavior, observe and record a cat's six senses, understand a cat's nutritional needs and understand common cat illnesses.

Leaping Forward is for advanced members. Here members can learn about genetics, practice cat showmanship, organize a cat quiz bowl and more.

Cats at the Fair

The purpose of the Cat Show is to provide Youth with an opportunity to exhibit a companion household feline (house cats), provide a sense of accomplishment, and allow them to demonstrate their knowledge of proper cat care and management of their pet. The hope is that this event will be entertaining and educational for both participants and spectators.

This Cat Show is open to all 4-H members. Cats can be brought on the grounds immediately before the show and must be removed at the conclusion of the show. All Cats must have a Rabies Certificate. It is also suggested that they also be vaccinated for feline distemper and feline leukemia, these are infectious, contagious diseases of cats. All cats must be under the control of the handler and in an appropriate cat carrier or portable kennel until asked to be placed in the judging cages by the judges. No animals are to be left unattended. No vicious, sick or hard to handle cats allowed.

Cat Workshops

These workshops teach 4-H youth about basic anatomy, health and care of household felines. Other topics include, basic grooming and showmanship These events are open to any youth ages 5-18 with an interest in cats.
