Nick Hamilton-Honey (they/them) has volunteered or worked for CCE of SLC since 2013. They worked in the 4-H Program until shifting over to the Ag & Food Systems Program at the end of 2019. They received a bachelor’s degree from Pennsylvania State University in Wildlife and Fisheries Science with a minor in Political Science and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan in Human Dimensions of the Environment.
Prior to working for CCE, Nick had a varied career leading to their current position. They worked for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Fuels Development as a policy analyst. This is where their interest in energy started. They would visit engineers at the National Renewable Energy Lab in Golden, CO and scientists at the Oak Ridge Lab and University of Tennessee. They would take this technical information back to D.C. and create memos and policy briefs for Congressional Subcommittees. While living in the nation's capitol, Nick also volunteered at the National Zoo in both the Small Mammal Exhibit and (the now closed) Invertebrate House.
After leaving DOE for a master's in Environmental Policy, Nick realized that human behavior as it related to environmental/energy action was more appealing to them. Upon graduating, their wife led them to Massachusetts to pursue her PhD. Nick worked at two hydroelectric facilities as a fisheries educator, the Robert E. Barrett Fishway fish elevator at the Holyoke dam, and the Turners Falls fish ladder. This experience cemented Nick's lifelong interest in energy. Leaving this seasonal work, Nick started working as a Chronic Wasting Disease Biologist for MassWildlife.
Family moved them back home to PA for a bit where they worked for Wildwood Nature Center in Harrisburg as an environmental educator. December 31, 2012 was the move up to the North Country and the beginning of a career at Extension. They have been teaching about environmental and sustainable energy for 25 years. Nick can assist you in understanding or making decisions related to energy, identifying household pests, invasive species management, tick and mosquito protection/prevention, and more.
When Nick's not helping community members, they enjoy spending time with friends, playing Dungeons & Dragons, cooking, hiking, swimming, gardening, and loving their Tibetan Spaniel, Eli.
