Explore plant and soil science while learning about our local and global food systems through hands-on learning activities, and pair the experience with a fresh snack made onsite in our local Harvest Kitchen.

Food Systems Hands-on Learning Activities

Who Grew My Soup: (Ideal for Fall)

Grades K-3

  • Objectives: Identify major food groups, identify NY grown products
  • Hands-on Activity: Go to high tunnel and talk about where food comes from, pick vegatables
  • On-site Activity: Make a soup using the Harvest Kitchen and vegetables from the high tunnel

Grades 5-8

  • Objectives: Identify NY grown product, local markets, and local economics
  • Hands on activity: Scientific Method Myth-buster activity: “Eating fresh is too expensive” – cost analysis of growing your own food vs purchasing in the store. Buying local analysis and impact. 
  • On-site Activity: Make a soup using the Harvest Kitchen and vegetables from the high tunnel


Apple Orchard Riddle: (Ideal for Fall)

Grades K-3

  • Objectives: Why farmers and bees are important. to agriculture and food systems
  • Hands on activity: Apple Oxidation
  • On-site Activity: Make applesauce using the Harvest Kitchen


Applesauce Bandit: (Ideal for Fall)

Grades 4-6

  • Objectives: Why farmers and bees are important.
  • Hands on activity: Busy Bees pollination game
  • On-site Activity: Go out to orchard and discuss orchard farming and pollination.
  • On-site Activity: Make applesauce using the Harvest Kitchen


Seed, Soil, Sun: (Ideal for spring/summer)

Grades K-3

  • Objectives: What plants need to grow, Importance of agriculture, Germination
  • Hands on activity: Bean baby activity & Plant a seed
  • Scientific method/Myth-busters activity:chart the growth of a seed with variables
  • On-site Activity: Go to high tunnel and green house to discuss plant life, plant a seed, map seed growth
