Forest Stewardship Workshop - From a few acres to large woodlots.

  • Tuesday, May 5, 2026, 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

DEC Forester, Steve Sherwood, and St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Forester, Aaron Barrigar, will be offering a woodlot and forest stewardship presentation on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Extension Learning Farm Back Classroom.

The presentation will touch on:

  • landowner goals including wildlife, timber, forest health, and recreation. 
  • natural forest regeneration and protecting natural regeneration from deer pressure, plant competition, and providing enough light for regeneration
  • forest management including thinning for forest health, crop tree release, wildlife mast tree release, and opening the forest canopy to encourage growth and biodiversity
  • information on forestry best management practices for soil and water conservation including discussing soil compaction, wrong timing of heavy equipment use, and tree selection/favoring for soil types
  • pests and diseases

Federal and state programs and cost sharing grants available for landowners for planting, forest health, wildlife habitat management, timber, and other management will be covered. Participants will leave with a handout of these programs and other informational materials.

The presentation is open to the public and free to attend with registration.
