Local Food Winter Social

Are you a local food producer, entrepreneur or food system advocate? 

CCE's Local Food Advisory Committee is hosting this free event to share our food system activities, envision future programming and allow others to communicate about their efforts. The social is free and will be located at the First Presbyterian Church - 42 Elm Street in Potsdam. See link below for registration as well as opportunity for your farm, business or food-related organization to display materials for free.

Evening Program

  • 5:00 to 5:30 - Enjoy refreshments, socializing, and browse displays from 15+ key players in the local food movement.
  • 5:30 to 7:00 - 4 choices for interactive breakout sessions
    • How Could Your Local Food Purchasing Be Elevated? - Daniel Martin of Martins Farmstand and John Dewar of Village Veggies will present an interactive session exploring the possibilities for increasing local food purchasing.
    • Growing the Local Economy with Local Food - A group discussion lead by Samuel Joseph, Director of the Sustainability Program at St. Lawrence University and Lee Van de Water, Local Foods System Development Specialist at CCE of Jefferson County.
    • Flexible Menus to Maximize Seasonal Sourcing - Cherie Whitten of Whitten Family Farm, will lead a discussion about the culture surrounding fixed menus, the alternatives, and how to take part in the change.
    • Opportunities for Creating Value-Added Products - Flip Filippi, manages the shared-use incubator kitchen at the Extension Learning Farm. Learn about existed value-added activities in the region as well as opportunities for workshops and technical assistance throughout 2020 for budding food entrepreneurs.
  • 7:00 to 7:30 - Wrap up discussion

Interactive Demo in Display Area

  •  Using a Refractometer- Correlate BRIX with Soil, Plant and Produce Quality -hands-on use of a refractometer, that measures plant sugars and minerals.

About the event hosts: What is the Local Food Advisory Committee?

The mission of the Local Foods Advisory Group is to encourage communication and cooperation among all local foods stakeholders working to build and strengthen the local food system in St. Lawrence County.

The Local Foods Advisory Group has two main functions:

  • To serve as an advisory committee for Cornell Cooperative Extension’s local foods team, providing feedback and suggestions on CCE programing and direction.
  • To coordinate and communicate with local foods stakeholders in the region towards a more robust food system in St. Lawrence County.
