Join in the fun at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, Canton, during the upcoming Spring Break!  Extension Educators and volunteers will provide hands-on workshops for youth in a variety of exciting topic areas. All classes, except the cooking class, are appropriate for children ages 5 and up.  The cooking class requires children to be at least 8 years old and to have some prior experience cooking.  Participation fees are $5.00 per class.

**Please note youth need to be signed in and out of each workshop. A permission slip must be completed. This form will be available the day of the workshop.

Vet Science Class-Monday, April 5, 10:00am-12:00pm-Fee $5:00

Come be a vet for the day! This exciting and interactive class is for kids that love animals and are interested in exploring a career as an animal care provider. Participants will explore veterinary science and practice first aid by bandaging on live and stuffed animals!  In this class, children will learn how to check a pet’s vitals, how to properly apply a bandage on a pet, examine some real-life animal radio-graphs, and they will get to listen to a real live animal's heartbeat all while being dressed up in surgery gowns.  Each participant in this class is asked to bring a stuffed animal to practice bandaging on.  For youth ages 5 years or older. Class registration will be limited to 15 participants.

Gardening Class-Tuesday, April 6, 10:00am-12:00pm-Fee $5:00

Community Horticulture Educator, Erica LaFountain, will lead this class in a fun gardening lesson, including several activities and a visit to the CCE greenhouse and high tunnel to learn about extending the growing season. Students will seed their own microgreens container garden to take home and seed some flowers to attract pollinators to our high tunnel and pollinator garden this summer. We will talk about what seeds need to germinate and what plants need to thrive. After learning about the different plant parts we eat, we'll all be looking at our veggies in a whole new way! For youth ages 5 years or older. Class registration will be limited to 15 participants.

Wildlife Exploration Class-Wednesday, April 7, 10:00am-12:00pm-Fee $5.00

Come to the Cornell Cooperative Extension Farm to learn about the wildlife in our area!  Participants will spend time exploring the different ways we can identify wildlife, through tracks, scat, and eating habits.  They will investigate coat patterns, habitats, and examine animal skulls and pelts. Participants will learn about our local wildlife and how to identify the different animals that they may encounter while out on hike or in their own backyard. Participants will even get to make a cast of a bear track and red fox to take home with them! For youth ages 5 years or older. Class registration will be limited to 15 participants.

Nature Journaling Class-Thursday, April 8, 10:00am-12:00pm-Fee: $5.00

Nature journaling is the practice of drawing or writing in response to nature. This fun, relaxing practice helps children learn to connect more closely with nature, and results in the creation of their own unique nature journal.  Participants in this class will be taught how to capture the moment (a sunset, a view, a critter, a flower, a tree…), and recall observations which would otherwise be forgotten. Participants will be provided a journal and be given drawing hints and techniques by the instructor and then will have the chance to practice these skills outside in the Extension Farm Woods.  For youth ages 5 years or older. Class registration will be limited to 15 participants.

Cooking Class-Friday, April 9, 10:00pm-12:00pm: $5.00

In this cooking class, we will provide a hands-on experience where youth can learn some cooking skills, review the importance of planning balanced and nutritious snacks/meals, and compete in some fun food challenges! Youth who participate in this class should have some experience with cooking as some of the basics will be expected. Participants will have a smoothie challenge, a follow the recipe exactly challenge, and a make a dessert out of a selection of ingredients challenge! This class is for youth ages 8 years or older. Class registration will be limited to 10 participants.
