Mid-Winter Break Specials 2018

Join in the fun at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, Canton, during the upcoming Mid-Winter break!Extension Educators and volunteers will provide hands-on workshops for youth in a variety of exciting topic areas.  Registration is required by Friday, February 16.  REGISTER HERE

Not all classes are appropriate for all ages so please check the age requirements in the class write-up. Participation fees may vary based on cost of materials.Register early as classes tend to fill fast.Those taking morning and afternoon sessions are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat during the noon break.Staff supervision will be provided.Classes will start in the backroom and then go to appropriate location after attendance.

Ice Fishing and Tip-Up Building:Tuesday, February 20th, 10:00am – 12:00pm with Andrew Carpino and Amy Sands, 4-H Educators.Fishing is not just for the summer months!Join us in building a tip-up to use on the Extension Learning Farm pond and to take home.Please bring layers of warm clothing and winter boots since weather permitting participants will gets a chance to try their luck at ice fishing. This class is open to all youth 5 years and up.Class limit is 12. Fee is $10.00

Spuds: Tuesday, February 20th, 1:00 – 3:00 with Joe Durney, Nutrition Educator and Ederly Jimenez, SUNY Canton Intern.Want to learn some new and delicious ways to fix potatoes?If so this class is for you! Participants will get hands-on experience trying out fun and delicious potato recipes.While the dishes are cooking some fun games will be played to increase your appetite for your creations. This class is for youth of all ages 5 and up. Class limit is 15.Cost for this class is $5.00.

Needle Felting Class:Wednesday, February 21st, 10:00am – 12:00pm with Maureen Ring 4-H and Afterschool Educator.Needle felting is a process that transforms loose wool into fabulous felt creations.Participants will learn some basic techniques and tips while creating their own soft fuzzy animal.This class is intended for ages 10 years and up.Class limit is 10.Fee is $10.00 per person.

Pizza and Snack Making:Wednesday, February 21st, 1:00 – 3:00 with Francesca Trombley, and Kristine Demeter, SUNY Potsdam Interns.Do you love pizza? Through hands-on experience participants will learn how to make a new and delicious pizza by using rice to make the crust. Cheese and vegetable topped pizzas will be made by the participants.The participants will also engage in making banana split bites.Tasting of all the various creations will be included along with recipes to take home. While the food is baking participants will learn how to check their heart rate before and after engaging in a few physical activities.Class limit is 12.Fee for this class is $10.00 per person, and is for youth age 5 and up.

Snowshoeing:Thursday, February 22nd, 10:00 – 12:00 with Casey Caswell, Youth and Family Lead and SUNY Interns. Come to the Cornell Cooperative Extension Farm and learn about North Country fun in the snow. After learning about what to pack on a snowshoeing excursion participants will strap on snowshoes and head out for a hike through the Extension Learning Farm woods. Snowshoes will be provided if you don’t own your own.Participants need to bring warm clothing and winter boots.Class limit is 10.This class is designed for youth 8 and up. When registering please state if you need snowshoes or have your own. Fee for this class is $5.00.

Candle Making and Yoga:Thursday, February 22nd, 1:00 – 3:00 with Francesca Trombley, SUNY Potsdam Intern and Ederly Jimenez, SUNY Canton Intern.Have you ever wanted to know how candles are made?Through hands-on instructions participants will make a candle to take home.While the candles are setting the participants will learn some basic yoga movements.This class is for any youth age 5 and up.Class limit is 12. Fee for this class is $5.00.

Youth Sewing Class:Friday, February 23rd, 9:00 – 12:00, with Casey Caswell, Youth and Family Lead, Amy Sands, 4-H Educator and Francesca Trombley, SUNY Potsdam Intern. This class is designed for youth with some experience operating a sewing machine. Participants will make a reversible table runner.This table runner can be used as a sewing project for presenting at the county fair, a decoration, or a gift. Each participant is asked to bring a sewing machine, fabric scissors, pins, ruler or tape measure, and 2 pieces of material cut into 34” X 16 rectangular pieces and matching thread.Cotton material is suggested. Denim or canvas is not recommended for this project. Class limit is 10.Fee for this class is $5.00 per person.
