In recent years the construction of grain bin storage has exploded across the North Country, both on farms and at supporting agribusiness. Firefighters and other first responders are strongly encouraged to attend this training to gain a baseline knowledge of grain bins, entrapments and rescue techniques. Each training will include a classroom portion, hands-on working experience with the grain bin simulator, and a site tour of an active grain bin.
This training provides information about grain bin design and structure, as well as the four most common ways that people become entrapped in grain bins. The hands-on portion of the training covers lockout/tagout procedures and extrication of a fully engulfed and partially engulfed victim.
Full NFPA compliant gear, hearing protection and safety glasses are required to participate in the hands-on portion of the training.
Instructor Brian Freese commented, “Becoming entrapped in grain can happen in seconds; faster than most people realize. When something bad happens, everyone says they will call 911, but are the first responders in that area trained to deal with that unique situation?
This training opportunity offers first responders a chance to learn about grain bin entrapment and how we deal with it as the people being called to help. From farmers to first responders, knowledge of how grain entrapment occurs can often prevent the situation from happening, but if it happens, the training strives to ensure that the first responders go home safely at the end of the day.”
Dinner will be provided, and registration is required. Depending upon enrollment, not all participants may have the opportunity to engage with the simulator.
