Hello, Insects! Field notes from a backyard

  • Wednesday, October 1, 2025, 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Take a tour of some of the insects discovered over ten years of looking for, photographing, and identifying some of the smallest creatures in a local backyard.

Eudora Watson, inspired by biologist Howard Ensign Evans’ book, Life on a Little-Known Planet, began photographing and identifying the insects in her yard years ago and has never looked back. In Hello, Insects!, Eudora will share some of the techniques she’s learned over the course of developing her catalog of over 100 species, including comparing the iNaturalist and Bugguide online identification tools, and will take you on a photo tour that includes beauty, weirdness and drama. She will also describe how she came to plant explicitly to attract insects and the results of those efforts.

Read more about Eudora's adventures with insects at her website blog, eudorawatson.com, and at her Substack account, eudorawatson.substack.com. Her writing has appeared in The Aurorean, Dragonfly Arts Magazine, Tule Review, Mainstreet Rag, and Blueline.
