Fungi Walk with Claire Burkum

  • Thursday, September 25, 2025, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Fungi are an essential part of our local ecosystems, although they are not always visible to the naked eye.  Join Claire Burkum, a mycologist with Burkum Plant Health & Tree Care, and biology instructor at St. Lawrence University, on a guided a walk to discuss the ecological roles of fungi (recyclers, food, pathogens and mutualists).

She will talk about how fungi have coevolved with and continue to interact with a variety of plants, from the trees in our forests to the plants in our vegetable gardens. Claire will also touch on some fascinating fungi-insect and fungi-amphibian interactions that shape the world around us. Bring a magnifying glass if you have one!

This will be moderate hike at the Extension Learning  Farm in Canton, NY. on grassy paths and a rutted road through a sugar bush. Participants should be prepared for this terrain.

This class is offered with an invitation, but no obligation, to donate to CCE to support this and other programs.
