How to create a forest garden

Join author and speaker, Dani Baker, to learn about creating a food forest. Dani is the creator of the Enchanted Edible Forest on Wellesley Island, a destination for gardeners. In September, she will bring her experience and enthusiasm to St. Lawrence Nurseries in Potsdam NY, where participants will take in her presentation as well as a tour of the nursery with owners Allyssa and Connor Hardiman.

Dani's background:

A former psychologist for whom operating an organic farm is her "retirement gig," Dani has cultivated a vegetable garden wherever she had a piece of land to work. She became a full time organic farmer when she retired in 2006, raising certified organic produce and grass-fed beef and goats.

Dani acquired her knowledge of permaculture design through reading and workshops, including a tour of Martin Crawford's Edible Forest Garden in Dartington, England. She thrives on helping others create an edible forest garden at any scale, focusing on practical planning, planting, and tending a resilient edible landscape.

At this event, Dani will be signing and selling her book, the Home-Scale Forest Garden, which is recommended reading according to local food foresters! It features over 100 food-bearing and multifunctional plants, including trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, ground covers, vines, and mushrooms, along with over 200 photos of a developing forest garden. The book also covers topics like plant grouping, creating microclimates, and learning from both successes and mistakes in the author's own forest garden.

Based on the book and her garden, Watertown’s WPBS is producing a multi-episode TV series which will be available for national distribution next year.

This event is a collaboration between CCE, the Local Living Venture, and St. Lawrence Nurseries.
