2020 Fair Preparedness Workshops

  • Friday, July 17, 2020, 12:00 AM - Friday, August 7@ 12:00 AM

Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County is excited to offer our 4-H'ers Fair Preparedness Workshops this summer!

We would like to take this opportunity to invite our current 4-H'ers to join us the second and third weeks of August 2020 to participate in Fair Preparedness Workshops. The goal of these workshops is to help our youth be fully prepared for the 2021 New York State County and State Fairs.

Oftentimes, our youth are interested in getting started in showing their project animal and are just not sure how or where to begin. Understanding how to prepare your animal for the show, knowing what the judges are looking for, and having the opportunity to practice presenting an animal are just a few of the opportunities we are planning on providing through our workshops. Even if you’ve been involved with 4-H animal projects for years, the workshops will provide an opportunity to connect with other 4-H'ers, to help guide some of our younger presenters, and to go over some refreshers for next year.

SLC 4-H will be offering fair preparedness workshops for dairy cattle, chickens, goat, sheep, cat, dog and rabbit. These workshops are for both beginner and experienced animal project members. Each workshop will be about 3 hours long. There will be a showmanship class where youth can practice what they have learned and win some ribbons immediately following each workshop. Preregistration will be required for the workshops and all participants must be registered by Aug 7th in order to participate.

Animals that are brought to the farm should be up to date on rabies vaccinations and paperwork will be required that provides this information. 4-H'ers may bring only one animal per workshop class and show. Participants can bring their own cat, dog, rabbit or chicken to these events. Large animals, including sheep, goats and cattle will be provided by the farm for demonstration purposes and for use by registered participants.

We are also providing the opportunity for projects to be submitted to the Cornell Cooperative Extension Farm for judging and display during the Fair Preparedness Workshops. If you have a 4-H'er that is interested in sharing a project that they have worked on this past year, please register to enter it in this summer's competition. Projects judged will receive ribbons and feedback from our local staff and can still be entered in next year's fair. All exhibits will require an exhibitors statement to be included with each entry. NO FOOD ITEMS.
