Dairy Transition Farmland Protection Initiative

  • Thursday, May 23, 2019, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Presentation Scheduled for May 23, 2019

The St. Lawrence County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board is hosting a presentation by the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust about the NYS Dairy Transition Farmland Protection Initiative. The program offers grant money to purchase the development rights of farmland that is at risk of being converted into non-farm uses. Dairy operators who participate in the program may use proceeds from the purchase to reinvest the money back into the farm operation, or transfer ownership of the business to a new owner.

The presentation will be held on Thursday, May 23rd at 7:00 pm in the 2nd floor conference room of the County Public Safety Complex, located at 49½ Court Street in Canton. Attendees will hear about eligibility requirements, the application process and project timeline. Dairy operators who are looking to retire or diversify income streams for their farm operation are encouraged to attend.

“Last month the County’s Ag and Farmland Protection Board heard a presentation about the program from the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust” said Matilda Larson, a Planner II who staffs the County’s advisory board. “This conservation easement program monetizes the development rights of farmland that is at risk of being developed into a non-farm use, and can help a dairy operator stay in business.”

Those who are unable to attend the presentation on the 23rd but are interested in learning more about the program may contact Jonathon “JJ” Schell, Associate Director of the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust at: (315) 779-8240.
