Mid-Winter Break 2019

Join in the fun at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Learning Farm, Canton, during the upcoming Mid-Winter break!Extension Educators and Volunteers will provide hands-on workshops for youth in a variety of exciting topic areas.Registration is required by calling Cornell Cooperation Extension at 315-379-9192 or visit stlawrence.cce.cornell.edu by Thursday, February 14.Participation fees vary based on cost of materials.Register early as classes tend to fill fast.Those taking morning and afternoon sessions are welcome to bring a bag lunch to eat during the noon break.Staff supervision will be provided.

Intro to Animal Science:Tuesday, February 19th, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm with Maureen Ring, 4-H Program Educator and Chloe Renaud, Ag Academy Student.Youth ages 9-16 will gain a general knowledge about animal care and management, most common health issues like parasites, diseases, teeth cleaning and bandaging. In this course participants will also learn about anatomy and physiology, laboratory techniques, and career exploration.Participants will get a chance to practice bandaging live animals.If you have allergies to animals this is not a class for you.Class limit is 15.Fee for this class is $5.00.For ages 9-16.

The Amazing Dairy Cow: Tuesday, February 19th, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm with Chloe Renaud, Ag Academy Student.Participants will get hands-on experience grooming and handling a dairy cow while also learning what qualities to look for when choosing a dairy cow for production and for showing, what to feed them to keep them healthy and producing milk and how to handle them so their best qualities are presented while showing.Class limit is 10.Fee for this class is $5.00.For ages 8+.

Snowshoeing & Wildlife Tracking:Wednesday, February 20th, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm with Nick Hamilton-Honey, Extended Day Afterschool Educator, Mitchell Spany, SUNY Canton Intern and Celeste Oppito, SUNY Potsdam Intern. Come join us for a fun and adventurous snowshoe tour of the Extension Learning Farm.We will spend time exploring the surrounding area for some of our North Country Wildlife.We will discover methods to spot wildlife and their signs even in the cold winter months.There will be a short introduction to snowshoeing before heading outside.Please bring layers of warm clothing and winter boots, since this class will have an outdoors component.Snowshoes will be provided for those who don’t have any. Class limit is15.Fee for this class is $5.00.Please indicate if you need snowshoes when registering.

Outdoor Survival & Cooking:Wednesday, February 20th, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm with Amy Sands, 4-H Educator, Mitchell Spany, SUNY Canton Intern and Celeste Oppito, SUNY Potsdam Intern.Come learn what it takes to survive in the wilderness.Participants will learn the basic steps of outdoor survival and how to cook outdoors.After a short classroom instruction time participants will have the chance to practice these skills, including cooking, in the Extension Learning Farm Woods. Please bring layers of warm clothing and footwear since everyone will be going to the woods. Class limit is 12. Fee for this class is $7.00.For ages 9+.

Pizza and grains:Friday, February 22nd, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm with Courtney Hart and Jenna Kesner, SUNY Potsdam Interns.Do you love to cook? Do you love pizza? Well, how would you like to learn how to make to make pizza pie from wheat flour? Through hands on experience participants will learn how to make a new and delicious pizza by using whole wheat flour to make the crust. Cheese, fruit and vegetable topped pizzas will be made by the Participants in this class.While the pizza is baking the participants will learn about whole grains and how to make half their grains whole grains.All will have a chance to sample the pizza when it is done.Class limit is 12.Fee for this class is $7.00.For ages 8+.

Spuds: Friday, February 22nd, 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm with Caitlin Potter, ESNY Nutrition Educator.Want to learn some new and delicious ways to fix potatoes?If so this class is for you! Participants will get hands on experience trying out fun and delicious potato recipes.While the dishes are cooking some fun games will be played to increase your appetite for your creations. Class limit is 15.Fee for this class is $5.00.For ages 5+.
