Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County is launching a Master Food Preserver Volunteer Program in conjunction with its Extension Kitchen, a commercial processing facility located at the Extension Learning Farm in Canton. The program includes in depth 3-day training on Tuesday, May 16, through Thursday, May 18, 2017, 8:30am - 4:30pm each day. Cost is $100 per participant. The training is made possible with the generous underwriting of the Canton Community Fund.

The workshop is designed as a train-the-trainer program for educators and volunteers to enable them to offer food preservation classes in their community. The program includes the scientific basis of home food preservation; hands-on experience in traditional canning and pressure canning, making jams and jellies, plus pickling and fermentation; demonstrations in freezing and drying; and a discussion of other methods of preservation. Certificates of participation are distributed to those who complete the course, as the first step toward becoming a certified CCE Master Food Preserver. The actual certifications are awarded after volunteer requirements are met by the volunteers, ensuring they give back to their communities and enrich the lives of others.

The Master Food Preserver Volunteer Program will be instrumental to the implementation of the Extension Kitchen and help Extension build a base of well-trained volunteers to provide educational outreach to community members. Volunteers will have access to the Extension Kitchen for future community workshops as well as other requested locations throughout the county. The 3-day course is appropriate for the experienced and novice food enthusiast alike.Training includes lunch each day and a food preservation notebook. Nightly study is suggested for the post-test for those interested in becoming a Cornell Cooperative Extension Certified Master Food Preserver. A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants. The class size is limited to 25.
