James Ellard

OFA Ag Academy Senior Graduating this Spring

Ogdensburg Free Academy Senior James Ellard enrolled in BOCES’ Agricultural Studies Academy last fall because he enjoys learning in an agricultural setting. Located at Cooperative Extension’s Learning Farm in Canton, Ellard described the Ag Academy as an ideal “farm environment where mistakes are not feared, and where we can improve our skills.” This past year, Ellard said he learned about the anatomy of farm animals, developed food preservation skills, and had the opportunity to interact with guest speakers who discussed their professions in agribusiness, farm management, veterinary science and various ag support occupations. “These presentations reinforced what we were learning at the time” said Ellard “it was a great program for getting hands-on experiences in the areas the teachers focused on.”

After graduating from OFA this spring, Ellard will continue his interest in animal science by enrolling in SUNY Canton’s Vet Tech Program this fall. When asked to describe the Ag Academy in three words, Ellard said: “Helpful, active and smooth” and said he enjoyed being able to go outside and learn something new just about every day.

The Agricultural Studies Academy offers a one-year program to high school seniors who are interested in pursuing an education or career in agriculture or agribusiness. The program offers an integrated curriculum that emphasizes: business management, plant and crop science, ag mechanics, animal and veterinary science, food production and processing, computer applications, and environmental stewardship. In addition to receiving classroom instruction, the Academy’s location at Cooperative Extension’s Learning Farm gives students the opportunity to receive hands-on field experience in livestock production and management, poultry production, hay production, rotational grazing, managing a sugar bush, as well as seasonal vegetable and fruit production.

To enroll, high school students graduating in 2018 must be in good academic standing
and have completed their Regents requirements. Students interested in enrolling in the program
can initiate the process by contacting their school counselor. Students and parents who would
like to learn more about the Ag Academy, or would like to schedule a visit can contact Patty
