Cover Crop Grant Funds Available!

The St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District (SLC SWCD) is looking for producers in the county that are interested in improving their soil health through the use of cover crops. A second round of funding has been received from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets Ecosystem Based Management Soil Health Mini-Grant to implement cover crops on 300 acres (200 acres in St. Lawrence County and 100 in Franklin County) in an effort to improve soil health.

The Working to Improve Soil Health in St. Lawrence and Franklin Counties (WISH) program is a joint effort between St. Lawrence and Franklin County SWCDs and Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County (CCE). A reimbursement rate of $41.25/acre will be issued for acres that are selected and planted to cover crops according to the plan provided to the landowner. All land accepted for the program must be planted in row crops (i.e. soybeans, corn, vegetable production) for both the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. Cover crops will be planted in the fall of 2016, no later than October 6th.

If you are a producer that is interested in trying cover crops, please call our office and answer a few easy questions to get your name on the list. A field visit will be conducted and sites will be ranked for selection.
